Shelter Care

Description
Shelter Care provides 24-hour, 7-day week emergency care and licensed shelter home placement for children and youth taken into protective custody by the Division of Child and Family Services or law enforcement officials for alleged abuse or neglect.  Many children experience emotional, mental and/or medial problems which may require immediate attention. Shelter parents receive ongoing training in management techniques to deal with these issues so that they will be able to establish an atmosphere of confidentiality, love, stability and security for the children placed in their homes.

Program Coordinator
Liz Rivera, Division of Youth Services Shelter Care 3999 S Main Street, suite N-2, Murray, UT 84107. Tel. (801)269-0518.

Volunteer Opportunities
Shelter Parent licensed homes provide short term (3-28 days), 24-hour placement for children and youth taken into state custody.  Caring for a child includes taking appropriate steps to address the child's emotional, mental and/or medical needs in a timely fashion, and helping the child to resume a normal, daily routine as soon as possible. Shelter parents receive a modest reimbursement for expenses.
Office Volunteer  Volunteers assist with general office assignments including client in-take.  They may also be involved in community outreach efforts to inform people about the Shelter Care program and to recruit new shelter homes.
Short-term Projects Groups and families may assist the Shelter Care program by engaging in short-term special projects, such as collecting and repairing toys and clothing, making quilts, or compiling hygiene packets.  For more ideas contact the program coordinator.
